Spotlight on St. Louis Neighborhood Activities
Volunteers Needed For June Bioterrorism Exercise
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), April 24, 2005 - The City of St. Louis Department of Health is looking for volunteer "victims" who will help the City test parts of its bioterrorism and emergency response plan on June 15.
On that date St. Louis City and other Eastern Missouri and Western Illinois counties will take part in an exercise that will see public health departments opening special clinics to provide medication to prevent illness in persons exposed to a biological agent.
"Exercises like this help us fine tune our emergency responses so that we can save as many lives as possible during and after a terrorist attack," said Saralou Hendrickson, Bioterrorism and Emergency Response Planner for the City of St. Louis Department of Health. "The volunteers will help their community prepare for bioterrorism and other public health emergencies," she added.
St. Louis City volunteers will meet at a designated location to be transported to a clinic, also known as a POD (Point of Dispensing). All volunteers will receive a free lunch and soft drink and a sincere thank you for helping. The exercise will last about three hours. To volunteer, call Kristy at 314-612-5483.
Mathews-Dickey Boys' & Girls' Club Receives State Tax Credits for Programs
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), April 24, 2005 - State tax credits will be used as a fundraising tool to support youth programs administered by the Mathews-Dickey Boys' & Girls' Club in St. Louis.
The Missouri Department of Economic Development has approved up to $210,355 in Youth Opportunity Program tax credits requested by the Mathews-Dickey Boys' & Girls' Club. The tax credits are expected to leverage at least $420,710 in donations that will help the not-for-profit organization cover costs associated with its Five Entity Initiative for at-risk youth in St. Louis.
"Programs supported by the Youth Opportunities Program help Missouri's most vulnerable youth avoid negative actions and give them an important chance for a brighter future," said Greg Steinhoff, director of the Department of Economic Development. "I applaud the Mathews-Dickey Boys' & Girls' Club for encouraging St. Louis's urban core youth to complete their education and providing them with life and work skills that will better prepare them for good upcoming career opportunities."
The Five Entity Initiative is a program for young people which focuses on their education, career, leadership, culture and outreach. The not-for-profit organization expects to reach approximately 1,250 St. Louis youth through this program with the goals of increasing the number of young adults who remain in school and receive a high school diploma and avoid criminal and violent behavior, while decreasing teen pregnancy rates. The program also will provide youth with career-readiness skills, technology training and tutorial services.
Private sector donors will receive a tax credit up to 50 percent of their donation for their contribution to an approved project. The credits can then be applied directly to the donor's Missouri tax bill.
The Youth Opportunities Program, which is administered by DED's Community Development Division, is designed to broaden and strengthen opportunities for positive development in community life for youth, and to discourage such persons from engaging in criminal and violent behavior. Approval of these tax credits is contingent upon completion of contracts set forth by the program.
