Spotlight on St. Louis Area Neighborhood Activities - Updated February 19, 2009
Post Offices hold Passport Fairs February 21
ST. LOUIS (SLFP.com), February 19, 2009 - For people planning a trip outside the country, the local Post Office can help travelers get there with the right documents.
On Saturday, February 21 Post Offices across Central and Northeastern Missouri and Southern Illinois will host "Passport Fairs." Postal Service sales and service associates will help residents with passport applications, fees and photos.
Travelers can now apply for either a passport or the new U.S. Passport Card at many Post Offices. The Passport Card can only be used for land and sea travel between the U.S., Canada, Mexico, Bermuda and the Caribbean.
The State Department advises passport production time averages four to six weeks.
While the cost of a passport has increased $8, the Postal Service processing fee has dropped $5.
The cost of passports for adults (16 years and older) is $100: $25 in a separate payment to the U.S. Postal Service for its processing fee; and a $75 separate payment (by check or cash only) to the State Department for the passport application fee.
The passport cost for those under 16 is $85: $25 in a separate payment to the U.S. Postal Service for its processing fee; and a $60 separate payment (by check or cash only) to the State Department for the passport application fee.
The cost of passport cards for adults (16 years and older) is $45: $25 in a separate payment to the U.S. Postal Service for its processing fee; and a $20 separate payment (by check or cash only) to the State Department for the passport application fee.
The passport card cost for those under 16 is $35: $25 in a separate payment to the U.S. Postal Service for its processing fee; and a $10 separate payment (by check or cash only) to the State Department for the passport application fee.
Children's Health Advocacy Project Receives Funding
ST. LOUIS (SLFP.com), February 17, 2009 - Legal Services of Eastern Missouri (LSEM) has received a three-year, $573,601 grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health to establish the St. Louis Children's Health Advocacy Project (SCHAP).

City of Kirksville Awarded $250,000 Community Development Block Grant
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), February 15, 2009 - The Missouri Department of Economic Development (DED) has announced that the city of Kirksville has been approved for a $250,000 Community Development Block Grant (CDBG). The grant will be utilized to renovate the historic Cochran Building in downtown Kirksville.
Kirksville is a Downtown Revitalization and Economic Assistance for Missouri (DREAM) community.
The Cochran Building, built circa 1880, is one of only a very few remaining warehouse-style buildings built along the old Wabash Rail Line in the late 19th century. The building served as a premier buggy, surrey and wagon supplier and ultimately sold the first automobile in Adair County. It later served as a warehouse where agricultural goods were purchased from local farmers, sold to suppliers and shipped out via rail.
The Kirksville Downtown Design Guidelines and the DREAM Initiative have identified a need for more upper-level residential units as well as further updated retail locations. The Cochran Building Renovation Project will accomplish all of these and its completion will positively impact the area by providing additional patrons to the downtown district.
