St. Louis Community Info, Monday, January 31, 2008
By Bob Moore, SLFP.com ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), January 21, 2008 - Hundreds of families, including religious leaders, local dignitaries and city officials, gathered in the rotunda of the Old Courthouse, Monday morning, to remember and honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The St. Louis observance began with a solemn civic ceremony featuring music, scripture readings and speeches. As St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay began speaking, the tone quickly changed with loud heckling from the audience drowning out his presentation. The disruption caused a long delay in the ceremony. Former St. Louis Fire Chief and Grand Marshall of the march Sherman George quickly stepped in and asked the protestors to stop. The distuption and heckling resulted in the mayor of St. Louis not participating in the march. Outside, the Old Courthouse, several hundred people waited in the bitterly cold weather to begin the annual march to Powell Symphony Hall on Grand Blvd for the Interfaith Service. The march, which was scheduled to begin at eleven, began just before noon. The march was led by Grand Marshall Sherman George, his wife, Catherine, St. Louis Comptroller Darlene Green, President of the St. Louis Board of Alderman, Louis Reed and other civic and religious leaders. Numerous signs bearing the message of Dr. King were held proudly by marchers. Others carried signs featured support for Obama and other civic causes. (NYSE: BKS), the world's largest bookseller, announced today that it collected and donated 1.16 million books during its 2007 Holiday Book Drive. Barnes & Noble booksellers selected non-profit organizations, schools, libraries, and literacy partners from among their own communities to benefit from the drive. "Our holiday book drive continues to reach more and more children each year. What makes our Holiday Book Drive so successful is that it's locally run," said Steve Riggio, chief executive officer of Barnes & Noble, Inc. "Each Barnes & Noble store picks the group or groups that will receive its donations. When we talk about bookselling being important work and a credit to the communities we serve, our Holiday Book Drive puts meaning to those words." The Barnes & Noble Holiday Book Drive benefited hundreds of local organizations providing thousands of children with books and the gift of literacy. Barnes & Noble stores donated books to local chapters of organizations such as Big Brothers Big Sisters, Boys & Girls Clubs of America, United Way, and the Salvation Army. Other local recipients included the Child Service Society of Wisconsin, Children's Restoration Network in Atlanta, Head Start in Missouri, Ronald McDonald House of Pitt County in North Carolina, Foster and Adoptive Care Coalition of St. Louis, North Carolina National Guard Family Assistance program, Global Literacy Project in New Jersey, Metro Health Hospital in Michigan, SMART (Start Making a Reader Today) of Clackamas County in Oregon, and the Redlands Christian Migrant Association Wimauma Academy in Florida. By Bob Moore, SLFP.com ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), January 13, 2008 - The history of St. Louis is told through beautiful black and white photography in a handsome new book, Historic Photos of St. Louis, recently released by Turner Publishing Company. This collection of nearly 200 images features text and captions by Jean Gosebrink, Special Collections Specialist at St. Louis Public Library, and Adele Heagney, St. Louis History Specialist at St. Louis Public Library. In an interview during a book signing at the Barnes and Noble store on Watson Road across from Crestwood Plaza, Gosebrink stated that the publisher was interested in using photos from the extensive collection at the Central Library and also looking for an author. "We knew our collection pretty good and could describe the photographs and write the bulk of the narrative part." Heagney said that they looked at nearly 1,000 images in the course of picking things out and changing some of the photos the publisher had. The captions, written mostly by Gosebrink, were then checked for accuracy against city directories and what was actually written on many of the photographs. The process of selecting the images took nearly two months. Both librarians agreed it was a very quick schedule for historic images that spanned two hundred years in the growth of St. Louis' economic life and government. A book lover who attend the signing said that she remembered just about everything covered in the book. "That's why I have to have the book," she laughed. Authors Jean Gosebrink and Adele Heagney will be signing copies of their new release Historic Photos of St. Louis on January 28, 2008 at 7pm at the Central Branch of the St. Louis Public Library, 1301 Olive Street, St. Louis, MO. The event is free and open to the public. For more information, please contact the library at 314-206-6779. Archived St. Louis Community News: |
