Design of New 6th Street Ramp May Impact Local Businesses
by Bob Moore, SLFP.com
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), January 22, 2004 - Large gapping holes and construction equipment have dramatically changed the view of the parking lot south of Busch Stadium as work continues on the new ballpark in downtown St. Louis.
As part of the project, the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) razed the 8th Street Ramp to eastbound I-64 to make room for the ballpark.
Businesses owners and citizens attended an open house at the East-West Gateway Coordinating Council, Thursday afternoon, to express their concerns over alternatives being evaluated in the design of the new eastbound I-64 on ramp from 6th street. The proposed design will also incorporate the 6th Street (last Missouri exit) ramp from eastbound I-64.
After viewing illustrations of the design for the proposed ramp, Donna Eldridge and her father, Ernest, owners of a manufacturing facility at 7th and Gratiot, told St. Louis Front Page, that the new ramp will have a dramatic impact on their business.

Precision Packaging, located at 7th and Gratiot since 1968, will be directly impacted by the proposed 6th Street Ramp.

"This will be a large section of our back parking area," stated Donna. "It will depleat the access that we have for the entrance into our parking area."
"Precision Packaging has been located here since 1968," stated Ernest Eldridge. "We're very concerned how this ramp will affect the future use of our property.
In looking at the design, I feel that we have a greater concern than most. We have possibly the one building and facility that will be disturbed the most. Most of the other property owners have parking lots.
"We have a vested interest in what's going on," stated Eldridge. "With this design, there will be no way we can get a tractor trailer into the back of the building necessary for manufacturing.
"Basically, it's going to make our building landlocked," observed Donna. "You won't be able to get in and out of our parking area."
The right-of-way process on the project will begin summer of 2004 with final design being completed in Fall 2005. Actual construction of the ramp is slated for Winter 2005 with completion by Winter 2006.
