Spotlight on St. Louis Area Neighborhood Activities - Updated January 5, 2010
Extreme Artic Cold Continues in St. Louis Area
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), January 4, 2010 - The City of St. Louis is taking steps to ensure that everyone stays safe during this extremely cold weather by opening 40 warming sites.
"The weather is forecasted to be dangerously cold for the next few days," said Mayor Francis G. Slay. "I encourage everyone to check on your friends, family members, and neighbors to make sure they're staying warm."
Bitterly cold weather is expected to continue through the weekend, according to the National Weather Service. A strong storm system, with accumulating snow potential of 3 - 5 inches, is expected across Missouri and Illinois along and north of Hwy 70. Strong winds are expected Thursday night and Friday night. Gusty winds and dangerous wind chills will keep temperatures in the low twenties during the day and near zero or below at night.
The City and its partners will work to make sure that there are emergency shelter beds available at existing facilities by expanding their capacity. To match those who need a bed to the actual bed, the Homeless Hotline operated by the Housing Resource Center will extend its hours of operation until 10:00 p.m. Anyone needing shelter should call the Hotline at 314-802-5444. Outreach teams will be mobilized in the City to identify those who need help.
Information on the closest center can be obtained by calling the United Way of Greater St. Louis at 211 or, if calling from a cell phone, at 1-800-427-4626.
A "reverse 911 system" will telephone 3,000 people who are on the City's special needs registry. The message is for people who are considered more vulnerable and at higher risk during cold weather. The message shares information on where to seek assistance and resources to help them stay warm.
Heat-Up St. Louis, Inc., a regional, all-volunteer utility assistance and public education charity is currently offering to help Missouri and Illinois residents, who are elderly and disabled, or low-income with small children.
Heat-Up officials announced that they now have significant City utility funds, and limited assistance in surrounding areas. Needy households, who already have disconnected utility services or a disconnection notice, may qualify for assistance, based on income and health issues. They should call, the Heat-Up automated resource hotline at 314-241-7668, or visit www.heatupstlouis.org
2010 Census Kickoffs at Old Courthouse
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), January 4, 2010 - Mayor Francis G. Slay was joined by Congressman Clay and Congressman Carnahan at the historic Old Courthouse for the official kickoff of the 2010 Census.
The Census forms will arrive in homes in March, making it essential that St. Louis residents are aware of the forms and prepared to fill them out as soon as they arrive. The City of St. Louis and the Census Bureau are working diligently to make sure that every St. Louisan knows the importance of the Census. In the 2010 Census, everyone counts.
"Getting an accurate count for the Census is critically important. We stand to lose $1300 for each person living in the City who is not counted in the Census," said Mayor Slay. "Therefore, I urge all residents to make sure everyone - absolutely everyone - in your household is counted. Remind your friends and family to not only fill out, but to send in the forms that will arrive in March."
The US Census Bureau also needs to fill thousands of jobs in the field positions of Recruiting Assistants, Crew Leaders, Crew Leader Assistants, and Census Takers. These temporary, well-paying jobs are available in almost every community. Interested persons can apply for these jobs by calling the Toll Free Jobs Line at 1-866-861-2010.
Anheuser-Busch Employees Donate $225,000 to Three Local Charities
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), December 21, 2009 - Anheuser-Busch employees are once again getting into the spirit this holiday season by donating a total of $225,000 to three charities; the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 100 Neediest Cases and Toys for Tots.
Each organization will receive $75,000 to help support programs they provide to assist children and families across our community during the holiday season.
"One of the great attributes of our employees is their willingness to give back to the community with not only their financial support, but by investing their time and talents in numerous organizations and programs that help thousands throughout the community," said Jim Brickey, vice president of People for Anheuser-Busch, Inc. "These donations are just another example of how our company and our employees help the less fortunate and provide support to those in need."
"This contribution will help make thousands of area children's holiday extra special," said Lt. Col. T. Shane Tomko of the U.S. Marines Corps' Toys for Tots program. "Because of Anheuser-Busch's employees and the generosity of so many throughout the community, we are expecting a banner year for donations and the support we can provide the children of the St. Louis area."
The funds were raised through the internal sale of obsolete office equipment to Anheuser-Busch employees.
St. Louis Receives Award for Municipal Excellence from the National League of Cities
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), December 20, 2009 - The City of St. Louis is one of eight cities selected to receive the Award for Municipal Excellence at the National League of Cities' (NLC) 2009 Congress of Cities & Exposition in San Antonio, Texas.
This year marks the 20th Anniversary of this prestigious award. As a Silver winner in the 150,001-500,000 population category, St. Louis is being honored for the St. Louis Alliance for Homeownership Preservation.
The St. Louis Alliance for Homeownership Preservation is a collaboration of five local agencies that was formed at the request of Mayor Slay in response to increased foreclosures in the City. It provides initial homeowner screening, budget preparation, financial literacy courses, intervention/negotiations with lenders to restructure/refinance existing mortgages and case management to homeowners at risk of going into foreclosure. The project is administered and funded by the City's Affordable Housing Commission.
"The work of the St. Louis Alliance for Homeownership Preservation has meant a great deal to both our citizens and the City of St. Louis," said Francis G. Slay, Mayor of St. Louis. "Working in partnership with the City, the Alliance has helped more than 800 families save their homes from foreclosure through counseling, intervention, and financial support since the project's inception in March of 2008. This means that our neighborhoods are more stable, more of our families have remained intact, and these homeowners have preserved their dignity."
As a Silver winner, St. Louis will receive an award of $1,000, which will be donated to the community non-profit organization of its choice.
Other award-winning cities include Slidell, La.; Savannah, Ga.; Long Beach, Calif.; New York City; Estes Park, Co.; Burnsville, Minn.; and Seattle, Wash.
