Disabled Veterans Get Health Care Priority from VA
WASHINGTON, DC, (SLFP.com), January 4, 2004 - All veterans with service-connected medical problems will receive priority access to health care from the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) under a new directive.
"Caring for veterans with service-connected medical problems is a major reason VA exists," said Secretary of Veterans Affairs Anthony J. Principi. "This directive should ease the minds of veterans who no longer have to wait for health care appointments."
The new directive provides that all veterans requiring care for a service- connected disability -- regardless of the extent of their injury -- must be scheduled for a primary care evaluation within 30 days of their request for care. If a VA facility is unable to schedule an appointment within 30 days, it must arrange for care at another VA facility, at a contract facility or through a sharing agreement.
The directive covers hospitalization and outpatient care. It does not apply to care for medical problems not related to a service-connected disability. However, veterans needing emergency care will be treated immediately.

MoDOT to Hold Public Hearing on Design of New 8th Street Ramp
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), December 28, 2003 - The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) is inviting the public to review and comment on the design under consideration for a public hearing will be held at the East-West Gateway Coordinating Council, located at 1 South Memorial Drive, Suite 1600, in the City of St. Louis, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Thursday, January 22, 2004. Access for the physically disabled is available.
The purpose of the open house is to present to the public the alternatives being evaluated in the design of a new eastbound I-64 on ramp from 6th street that is to replace the eastbound I-64 on ramp at 8th street which is being removed to make room for a new ballpark in downtown St. Louis.
All interested persons will be given an opportunity to be heard concerning their views on the location and design of the 8th Street Ramp for the Cardinals Ballpark, its impact on the environment and its consistency with the goals and objectives of the community.
The design team will have the goals, the data, and various displays and handouts will be available. This information will show how the alternatives begin to address the issues of safety, congestion, and condition of the existing bridge structures.
"We will show information to help people understand the differences between the alternatives," Project Manager, Jim Middleton said, "so they can give us some feedback."
Residents, business owners, commuters, and other interested parties are encouraged to attend the meeting. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact MoDOT Sr. Public Information Specialist, Debbie Allen at 314/340-4163.

Recycle Christmas Trees At Forest, O'Fallon, Carondelet Parks & Botanical Garden
ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), December 28, 2003 - After the glow of Christmas is gone and decorations have been taken off the tree, city residents can take the naked tree to one of three city parks or the Missouri Botanical Garden to be recycled. Trees can be dropped off at:
Carondelet Park, Grand and Holly Hills, at picnic grounds #2
Forest Park, the Upper Muny parking lot (between Summit and Union drives)
O'Fallon Park, West Florissant and Holly, at picnic grounds #4
Missouri Botanical Garden, 4500 block of Shaw
Trees will be accepted at the park sites from Friday, Dec. 26 through Jan. 20. The trees will be ground into mulch that will be free and available at the same sites after Dec. 31.
Trees must be free of all decorations. Remove the ornaments, tinsel, lights and tree stand. Do not put the tree in a plastic bag or cover it. Wreaths and pine roping are not taken at the sites.
"We want to encourage residents to recycle their trees. We picked locations in the north, south and central areas of the city to make our recycling sites as convenient as possible," said Greg Hayes, Forestry Commissioner.
City residents should not place Christmas trees in alley Dumpsters. The Refuse Division will collect Christmas trees as part of its regular monthly bulk waste pickup.
For more information about Christmas tree recycling, call the Botanical Garden at 577-9555.
