Crews Install Performance Space at Old Post Office Plaza
Crews at the Old Post Office Plaza have completed the installation of the steel supports that will eventually support the plaza's cloud wall. It took two weeks to install the twenty 44-ft steel beams (approximately 30 tons) and to build a 113 foot x 44 foot video wall (50 tons of steel total). Crews are now installing the permanent screen on the video wall.
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), November 19, 2008 - The Old Post Office Plaza is downtown's newest park, realizing a vital component of the Downtown Now! Plan. Crews are now installing the permanent screen on the video wall in front of the south wall of the Roberts Orpheum Theater.
A space for performances, gatherings or quiet reflection, the Plaza will incorporate extensive landscaping and cascading water over a bronze sculpture, "Torso di Ikaro," by internationally acclaimed artist Igor Mitoraj. Based on the Greek myth of Daedalus and Icarus, the Plaza will feature an open space for performances, a stage, tiered seating, a tree-covered Labyrinth with benches, and a wall for video displays.
The Old Post Office Plaza is owned by Downtown Now and managed by the Downtown Community Improvement District. Funding for the $8.16 million, 30,000 square foot multipurpose plaza included support from the Danforth Foundation, the US Bancorp Community Development Corporation and the St. Louis Brownsfields Cleanup Fund (via SLDC).
