Soldier's Memorial Plans to Better Serve and Honor Veterans
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), November 20, 2005 - Mayor Francis G. Slay has announced four new members to the Soldiers' Memorial Building Commission and challenged the commission to improve the City's tribute to the men and women who served their country.
"The casualty count in Iraq just topped 2000," said Slay in a statement. "There is no better time to rededicate ourselves to veterans and remember the sacrifice they have made to keep us free."
Slay said he would meet with the new commissioners next week. He will ask them to study the current operations in three specific areas and report back to him with conclusions and recommendations within 60 days. The three areas are: The building's mission. Governance, finance and administration. Marketing and use of the Memorial Building.
"I am challenging the commission to answer one fundamental question," said Slay. "How do we use this Memorial to better serve and honor veterans."
The four appointments are: Judith Hanses, American Legion Post #493; Thomas Gilmore, Korean War Veterans Association; Roy George, brother of Fire Chief Sherman George, Military Order of the Purple Heart; and, Larry Endicott, Disabled America Veterans.
"Soldiers' Memorial is an underused asset," Gilmore said. "I thank the mayor for his support of veterans. He is the first mayor in recent memory to show any interest in the Soldiers' Memorial."
Soldiers' Memorial Military Museum is dedicated as a memorial for veterans and as a museum for preserving a historic collection of military artifacts. The residents of St. Louis voted in 1923 to appropriate $6 million for the purchase of a memorial plaza and monument to commemorate St. Louisans who lost their lives in World War I. Residents later raised $1 million to construct the building. The site was officially dedicated by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on October 14, 1936. It was opened to the public on Memorial Day, 1938.

Soldiers' Memorial Military Museum is dedicated as a memorial for veterans. Two museum rooms contain a collection of military items - fireamrs, edged weapons, memorabilia, flags, posters and medals depicting St. Louis' patriotic and active military involvement from 1800 through the present.
