Summertime Fun for Everyone in St. Louis City
by Betty Magrath, SLFP.com
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com) May 26, 2005 - This summer, the City of St. Louis promises to be lively with numerous activities appealing to both visitors and residents, according to civic leaders and representatives from a group of organizers who unveiled a calendar of events for Summer in the City during a press conference, held at City Museum.
The summer-long, city-wide series of events was created to grant additional exposure to and promote various activities, attractions and restaurants. Organizers for Summer in the City hope to draw visitors from a 300-mile radius of St. Louis.
The entertainment calendar features familiar events beginning with Rib America, First Friday Gallery Walk, Washington Avenue Beat Fest, Komen Race for the Cure, Joe Torry Celebrity Weekend, Strassenfest, Moonlight Ramble, Hispanic Festival, Big Muddy Blues Festival and ending with the Labor Day Parade.
New activities include "Docktails" Cocktails on the new Gateway Riverboat Dock on Thursday evenings, June through August, from 4:40 - 7:30 p.m.; Rockin' on the Landing, June 10 - 11; a Downtown Restaurant Week, August 22 - 27; and a scaled-down return of EATS Bridge, July 2 - 4. Plans are still being worked out for a modified version of last year's RiverSplash sometime in August.
In an interview following the press conference, Arnold Donald, general chair, Fair Saint Louis 2005, stated "We are going to do 25 years of celebrating the community. It will be the largest, three-day, Fourth of July celebration in the country."
The entertainment lineup for Fair Saint Louis features hip hop, to classic rock, to country and pop with groups including Black Eye Peas, Ted Nugent, Swishfoot, Raven, the Oak Ridge Boys and the Four Tops. "We will also have the 'Here's to the Heroes Tour 2005,' featuring 16 Clydesdales on July 4 and EATS Bridge. You can't get more St. Louis than that," stated Donald.
When asked if Fair Saint Louis competes with other civic Fourth of July celebrations, Donald responded "I think that it's wonderful other communities have their own celebrations. That's also been tradition in our region. We are a multi-city region and these celebrations build neighborhood pride." He added that with a three-day event, people will have an opportunity to participate in their local communities and then come downtown and celebrate with the larger community.
"This year's fireworks, which I always look forward to the most and probably just about everybody in the city, are going to be even more spectacular than ever," Donald said with a big smile.
Donald stated that the Fair has always been challenged to meet expenses for the civic event. "It run by volunteers, but there is considerable costs associated with it. However, we were able to be in the black last year, despite terrible weather patterns because people came out and supported the Fair," he said.
Fair Saint Louis partnered with National City to create a summer wristband promotion that would show an individual's support of Fair Saint Louis. Under this program, participants can purchase a $5 wristband from any National City bank branch and receive incentives to visit over forty downtown attractions, restaurants, retail establishments, hotels and events from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend.
Summer in the City is a collaborative effort by the City of St. Louis, Downtown St. Louis Partnership, St. Louis Cardinals, Fair Saint Louis, Veiled Prophet Parade, Laclede's Landing, the Arch and Riverboats, St. Louis Convention & Visitor's Commission, the City Museum, METRO, National City and President Casino.
