Keeping St. Louis Clean
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com) May 16, 2005 - The St. Louis metropolitan region continued its campaign for clean air quality with the 2nd annual Clean Air Festival at Keiner Plaza in downtown St. Louis.
In a statement, Susannah Fuchs, American Lung Association of Missouri, said, "In past years, our efforts centered on encouraging individuals to help reduce air pollution levels by carpooling, or by taking MetroLink or the bus, rather than commuting alone." Fuchs noted that the organizers are now focusing on providing people with the information they need to also get them thinking about clean air when they're at home and at work, not just while they are on the road.
The City of St. Louis agreed to participate in the U.S. Clean Cities Program, promoting the use of alternative fuels in 1994. A year later, the city formally implemented the use of bio-diesel and ethanol fuels in several departments. The Airport Authority also began using bio-diesel at a 20% blend in over 200 units in its fleet.
The Airport Authority purchased it first compressed natural gas (CNG) fueled vehicle in 1999. A CNG fueling station was built in 2000. Today, the Airport plans to add an additional 8 dedicated CNG shuttle busses to it parking fleet, which includes twenty-nine airport shuttles and miscellaneous support vehicles from SuperPark.
The event featured a performance by Alvin Jett and the Phat noiZ Blues Band. Free Ted Drewes frozen custard and bottled water was available to the first several hundred attendees courtesy of ESP Missouri, Inc. and Schnucks.
Participants included the American Lung Association, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation, Citizens for Modern Transit, Gateway Clean Air Program, Madison County Transit, Metro, Missouri Department of Transportation, Missouri Botanical Garden - EarthWays Center, RideFinders, St. Louis Community Air Project, St. Louis Regional Clean Cities Program, Trailnet and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.
