Great River Ring Celebrates Five Years in Efforts to Connect the Region Through Parks & Trails
by Betty Moore, SLFP.com
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), May 8, 2007 - Civic leaders including St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay, St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley, St. Charles County Executive Steve Ehlmann and former Senator John C. Danforth joined nearly 300 representatives from area organizations in a special celebration of five years effort by the Great River Greenway District.
The morning breakfast event in the Lakeside Cafe at the St. Louis Zoo featured a video overview of the project. Highlights included the Boschert Greenway in the City of St. Charles which connects to the Missouri River Greenway and the Katy Trail; the new bridge over River Des Peres Greenway and St. Vincent Greenway which will connect UM-St. Louis to Forest Park.
The Great Rivers Greenway District is funded through Proposition C, a one-tenth of one cent sales tax passed by the voters in St. Louis and in Illinois in 2000, which generates $10 million annually.
Since 2000, the vision of a well-planned, interconnected 600-mile River Ring of more than 45 greenways, parks and trails has become a reality. The citizen-driven effort has brought economic development to communities encompassing the project while preserving the natural environment.
Keynote speaker Senator Danforth spoke of the great passion that people had toward the St. Louis region and the tremendous effort involved in The River Ring. "Let's make this a place where people can go and enjoy," said Danforth.
When complete, The River Ring will link three counties, join two states, and cover an area of 1,216 square miles with 1.6 million residents in more than 100 municipalities.
The River Ring plan includes:
- Bicycle and/or pedestrian bridges
- Boat rentals and docks
- Information kiosks
- Interpretive trails with explanatory signage
- Parking hubs, including accessible spaces
- Picnic facilities, shelters and restrooms, and
- Rental facilities for bicycles and electrically powered golf carts.
