100 Black Men of Metropolitan St. Louis Break
Ground on New Headquarters
by Bob Moore, SLFP.com
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), March 7, 2006 - The 100 Black Men of Metropolitan St. Louis Chapter was one of nine founding chapters in 1983 that now includes 103 chapters and more than fourteen thousand members across the United States, England and the Bahamas.
Today, the St. Louis Chapter set another benchmark with a special groundbreaking ceremony for their new headquarters at 4631 Delmar.
In an interview following the groundbreaking, St. Louis Mayor Francis G. Slay acknowledged that the 100 Men organization had done wonderful things for the kids in the community for many years. "This new building is going to allow them to be closer to the community that they serve and also to provide better services," stated Mayor Slay.
"We are really excited that this area of Delmar and the Central West End is coming back," continued Mayor Slay. "This will certainly help us with our efforts to improve opportunities for our youth."

Jacque Land, President Elect, 100 Black Men, stated that they had been working on the project for over four years. "It's been a long time coming," said Land, "and we are blessed to finally be here today to break ground and to provide a positive impact for the community and the youth that we are going to serve."
The facility, scheduled to be completed in October 2006, will serve as a prime resource for youth and community development, housing the organization's mentoring, education, economic development and health & wellness programs and other initiatives.
Land added that they are always looking for outstanding African-American males to be mentors and role models and to be a part of the organization. "We are also looking for contributions to the program," stated Land.
James Tatum, President, 100 Black Men, echoed Land's enthusiasm. "We feel very proud. We are very honored and just thrilled to death that we are getting ready to start the actual building itself."
Gerald Brooks, Marketing Director, Saint Louis Public Library, has been a member of the 100 Black Men for the past three years. "I see this project as total progress for the community. Not only is it taking empty land that is just sitting there, it is putting something constructive on that land. It will help the youth and the neighborhood."
Brooks stated that the St. Louis Library also works with the 100 Black Men on various projects. "That is our theme - youth. So we are working hand in hand with them. It's one of the things that got me interested in becoming a member."
