A Day to Remember
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

by Bob Moore, SLFP.com

ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com) January 17, 2005 - A solemn civic ceremony in the rotunda of the historic Old Courthouse, Monday morning, honored the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Following a program featuring music, scripture readings and speeches, families and friends joined religious leaders, local dignitaries and city officials for the march to Powell Symphony Hall for an interfaith service.

Perhaps it was the bitter cold that brought out so few to this year's celebration. In past events, there were over several thousand strong shouting 'Keep the Dream alive' and 'justice, jobs and equality' during the march, supported by hundreds of families lining the streets.

Outside the Old Courthouse, several hundred people waited quiety in anticipation for the signal. Numerous signs bearing the message of Dr. King were held proudly by individuals and members of various religious and civic organizations. Many signs bore messages protesting the war and President Bush.

Dion Thorpe helped several young boys from the BAMADE (Black Americans Making a Difference Everywhere) hold their hand lettered signs. "I'm a mentor with the program in the 26th ward," he said. "We are helping to keep King's dream alive."
