The event featured three distinguished award presentations, the YMCA's "Human Dignity Award," and "MLK Tribute Award" and $4,000 in student scholarships awarded for the first and second place winners of the citywide student "MLK Essay Contest."
The breakfast featured performances by students of the YMCA Creative and Performing Arts Center, featuring the Swinging-Seniors and the NAACP Youth Choir. In addition, student-winners of the essay contest read their award-winning essays.
A ceremony honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was held in the Rotunda of the historic Old Courthouse. Following the ceremony, several thousand families, youth groups, representatives of community and religous groups gathered outside the Courthouse in anticipation for the annual march to Powell Symphony Hall.
The march began shortly after 11:30 a.m. with Richard Dockett, parade marshall since 1968, announcing it was time to go. Many participants proudly carried signs as they following St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay, who walked hand in hand with local and state officials. Many in the crowd worn T-shirts adorned with messages and buttons in tribute of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Participants in the annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Celebration March lined up outside the historic Old Courthouse prior to the start of the event. Alphie Smith (carrying poster at far right) has marched every year in St. Louis with the exception of several years when she marched in Atlanta.
