Family Justice Center in Downtown St. Louis to Help Victims of Domestic Violence
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), January 12, 2006 - The first-ever Family Justice Center, funded by a $1.25 million U.S. Department of Justice grant, was officially opened Thursday in downtown St. Louis. The 12,000-square-foot facility, located at 1139 Olive Street, 6th Floor, will serve as a one-stop resource for women and their families looking to escape domestic violence and abuse.
"It is our hope that with more and better coordinated support, victims will recover faster. It is also our hope that the Family Justice Center will allow police and prosecutors to do a better job of holding abusers accountable for their actions," stated Mayor Francis Slay in an announcement.
The Family Justice Center is a pilot program designed to make a victim's search for help and justice more efficient and effective by bringing professionals who provide an array of necessary services together under one roof. The Justice Department's Office on Violence against Women (OVW) has taken the lead to develop domestic violence service and support center in 15 communities across the nation. The City of St. Louis was selected from among hundreds of communities nationwide in July 2004 to receive one of the justice centers.
A victim who comes to the Family Justice Center will have access to some or all of the following services: counseling, Police Department, Circuit Attorney's office, medical unit, civil legal services, State of Missouri Children's Division, children's playroom/waiting room, chaplaincy program, and victims' advocates. More than 26 on and offsite collaborative partners will provide their skills and resources at the Family Justice Center.
The City of St. Louis used the grant to get the center off the ground. At the opening ceremony, Verizon Wireless announced its pledge of $100,000 to assist the center over the next several years. The Saigh Foundation has also made a grant to the center in the name of Mayor Slay.
The Family Violence Council Foundation has been created to develop ongoing funding for the project, and is being chaired by former St. Louis Circuit Attorney Dee Joyce Hayes.
The Family Justice Center will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Victims of domestic violence do not pay for services provided at the Family Justice Center. For more information, call 314-241-0077. Victims who require immediate assistance are encouraged to call the domestic violence crisis line at 314-531-2003.
