Steel Signing Celebrates First Phase of MasterCard's WingHaven Campus

by Bob Moore, SLFP.com

O'FALLON, MO, (SLFP.com), August 22, 2000 - The first phase of steel construction was completed with a "steel signing" ceremony, Tuesday, at MasterCard Global Technology and Operations' (GTO) WingHaven campus in O'Fallon, MO.

City officials, MasterCard executives, friends and WingHaven contractors gathered for the topping-off festivities. Participants enjoyed the opportunity to add their signature to the last piece of the 1,000 lb. structural steel beam before it was hoisted into position by a 60-ton crane affectionately referred to as "Susie" by the site crew. The event took place exactly one year after groundbreaking.

"This is a very important project for MasterCard and we have made a significant commitment to it in terms of the people who have been involved. We want this to be a home for our people and we want our people to participate in the interior design," said Jerry McElhatton, president, MasterCard GTO.

He noted that construction on the computer center would begin in January and that they expected to move in sometime in May 2001. The tight schedule would entail duplicating all data at their current St. Louis location and installing the data in the new facility so that there would be no interruption of processing services. Two additional buildings would be available next August. The entire project is expected to be completed by October 2001.

McElhatton projected that the high tech company will be handling over 100 million financial messages over the network and selling over $1 million each day in the new facility.

"We are ahead of schedule," proudly stated Paul McKee, chairman of McEagle Development, WingHaven's site developer. He complimented the City of O'Fallon for its support in the public/private partnership, noting the numerous inspections, electrical permits and design drawings that had been reviewed. Paric Corporation is the general contractor with Hellmuth, Obata + Kassabaum (HOK) as WingHaven's primary architect and planner.

The campus, located east of Highway 40 near the future Page Avenue Extension, will include a four-wing, brick office building containing 520,000 gross square feet, a 12-acre lake and 1,700 parking spots. The campus will contain the data and command center which manages MasterCard's worldwide network. WingHaven Development will be a "mixed use" community with 2,000 residential units, 400,000 s.f. retail and commercial space, 1,000,000 s.f. of office space and 1,200,000 s.f. of high tech assembly, laboratory and service center facilities.Red Dot
