Two St. Louis Construction Companies Partner to Build American Axle Headquarters in Detroit
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), April 10, 2002 -
Two St. Louis-based construction firms, Alberici Constructors and Clayco Construction Company, have partnered to build the new $32 million world headquarters for American Axle & Manufacturing Holding, Inc (AAM) in city of Detroit.
The eight-story, 248,00-square-foot office building, which includes one-level of underground parking, is being constructed on a 19-acre site at the northeast corner of Holbrook and Interstate 75. Adjacent to the office building, Alberici Constructors and Clayco are also building a 225,000-square-foot, two-story parking deck that will accommodate more than 500 vehicles. The site of the new development is part of AAM's existing 174-acre campus.
Luckenbach/Ziegelman Architects, P.L.L.C. designed the building to be constructed of a reflective glass curtain wall and architectural precast panels with limestone accents at the front entry. The facility will include a 300-seat cafeteria and 300-seat auditorium on the first floor, a two-story lobby with bridges, and an open floor plan throughout. The building will feature high tech mechanical systems, adding to the overall efficiency of the heating and cooling systems.
AAM has been instrumental in supporting revitalization efforts in the city of Detroit. When the company moved to the current campus in 1994, it created modern manufacturing facilities and also focused on the infrastructure of the site. In cooperation with the state of Michigan and the city of Detroit, AAM tore down abandoned houses and run-down buildings surrounding the site and made improvements in roads, sewers, sidewalks and lighting. As part of AAM's efforts, the campus now includes an extensive greenbelt area.
AAM is a world leader in the manufacturre, engineering, design and validation of driveline systems and related components and modules, chasse systems and forged products for trucks, buses, sport utility vehicles and passengers. Over the past several years,
