Construction Begins on Kirkwood Senior Living Facility ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), February 14, 2010 - With financing in place, construction of Aberdeen Heights will now begin at the former site of St. Joseph Hospital at 525 Couch Avenue in Kirkwood. A notice to proceed with demolition of the hospital has been issued, and Environmental Operations, Inc., has begun the abatement and demolition process. The new senior living community will offer 243 independent living apartment homes, surrounded by an impressive array of amenities, including restaurant-style dining, fitness center complete with indoor pool, creative arts area, media room, club room and ample below-grade parking. "Our future residents have clearly indicated by their initial reservation deposits that they want the fulfilling lifestyle and long-term security Aberdeen Heights will give them," said Bill Ward, president and CEO of Presbyterian Manors of Mid-America (PMMA), a not-for-profit corporation with 17 affiliated senior living communities in Missouri and Kansas. "They want a community that is as vibrant and social as they are, but can also provide appropriate services and support in the future if their health or circumstances should change." In addition to independent residential living, Aberdeen Heights' continuum of care includes 30 assisted living apartments, 15 memory support suites and 38 skilled nursing private rooms, all on campus, to provide services and support for residents, if needed in the future. "Aberdeen Heights is focused on an active lifestyle for independent living residents, with long-term security that comes from having a plan in place for future services and support, if needed," said Laura Sample, director of marketing for Aberdeen Heights. "Aberdeen residents have addressed the 'what-ifs' in their lives, and they see substantial value in that." Aberdeen Heights will operate on an entrance fee model, in which residents pay an entrance fee, which can be up to 95 percent refundable. This entrance fee, combined with a smaller monthly fee, entitles a resident to access all the community's services and amenities that come with residing in an independent living apartment home. Aberdeen Heights' unique health care benefit provides for predictable health care expense through on-site care at a greatly reduced cost to residents, if ever needed. The community's assisted living, memory support and skilled nursing care will also be available, space permitting, to others who are not Aberdeen Heights independent living residents. Because of the timing of Aberdeen Heights' construction schedule, Sample said the community's future residents are well-positioned to take advantage of a recovering economy. "Since construction of the new Aberdeen Heights is just starting, resident depositors won't be looking at selling their homes right away," said Sample. "However, you'll certainly see activity on our site very soon, as we remove the old hospital and start building this wonderful new community."
