ST. LOUIS, MO (SLFP.com) Dec 18, 2001 - This Christmas season, travelers at 16 major North American airports will pass through exit/entry checkpoints at American Airlines equipped with sophisticated FAA-approved video surveillance systems.

The ExitSentry system, developed by St. Louis-based Cernium, a leading developer and provider of behavior-recognition software and systems for the security industry, has been in place at Lambert St. Louis International since 1996.

Sean Patty
Sean Patty, president and chief executive officer for Cernium.
In a phone interview, Sean Patty, president and chief executive officer for Cernium, described how the ExitSentry operates at airport checkpoints. "The FAA requires airports to have screening guards at all exit lanes. This high technology system alleviates the need to have a guard because it identifies objects with real-time video playback and instantly takes a picture of someone going the wrong way," stated Patty.

He commented that the system empowers guards with an image in seconds. A siren sounds and strobe lights flash to allert guards nearby at the entry lanes that there has been a security breach," stated Patty. He emphasized that the system only detects "wrong way" motion and is not involved with face recognition technology.

He noted that typically it's a small child that has triggered the system. "With this behavior recognition technology, security guards can immediately identify the potential perpetrator without having to shut down the entire airport," explained Patty.

"If Hartsfield International Airport in Atlanta had this system, there would have been no need to shut the airport down for four hours recently. They would have identified and caught that person within minutes. That situation had a ripple effect at many airports by grounding planes and costing thousands of dollars in damage because of delayed flights."

The company recently completed the installation of its ExitSentry system at three American Airlines checkpoints at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in A, B and C concourses, where some 15,000 travelers pass through every day.

Over 28 ExitSentry surveillance systems have been installed at 16 major North American airports.
"American Airlines has always been committed to the security of our passengers, as well as others in the airports where we operate," said John Hotard, manager, corporate communications, American Airlines. "These installations represent another example of that commitment to security, enabling the use of leading-edge technology to complement the efforts of our existing security personnel."

Patty acknowledged that the system was developed over several months and successfully completed a thorough and lengthy FAA testing process in which the federal agency tried to defeat the system with surprise visits and clever techniques known to terrorists.

The proprietary software system uses off-the-shelf computers and monitors and ranges in cost from about $50,000 to $75,000. "It's a rapid payback system that provides airports with 24 hour security without the need and cost for a 'live' guard. Also, the system can be easily integrated into an existing system," stated Patty.

The company is currently expanding its surveillance technology with a new product, Perceptrak(TM). Patty stated that this technology integrates directly with existing closed-circuit TV systems typically deployed within parking garages and quiet corridors inside buildings. "The system monitors all the boring surveillance video of hundreds of cameras. It immediately allerts security staff if there is interesting action or suspicious behavior," commented Patty. "There is an unlimited vertical market for this application."

Cernium is a spin-off of St. Louis-based Ross & Baruzzini, one of the country's largest engineering consulting companies, specializing in airport security and communications systems.

In addition to DFW and Lambert St. Louis International, ExitSentry is installed in concourses at 15 other North American airports, including Salt Lake City, Orlando International, Love Field in Dallas, Cleveland Hopkins International, William P. Hobby in Houston and Calgary (Alberta) International.Red Dot
