St. Louis Plans Transportation Center
Transportation Center
ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), Nov 17, 1997 - Visitors to St. Louis will have a choice of alternate ways to make their trip when the new St. Louis Gateway Transportation Center opens in 2001.

The intermodal hub will provide for intercity trips (between cities) involving rail (Amtrak and future high-speed rail to Chicago), bus (Greyhound) and air (airline ticketing and direct connections to Lambert-St. Louis International Airport via MetroLink). Within the City of St. Louis, the center will provide for intracity trips on MetroLink (via an expanded Savvis Center station), Bi-State bus (via transfer improvements at the Savvis Center station) and by auto (car rental).

A 22,000-square-foot Amtrak-Greyhound terminal will include tickets, baggage handling, office and support space for both Amtrak and Greyhound. The terminal will have a joint waiting area, restroom facilities, vending and restaurant space. The public will be able to access the terminal from an auto-drop-off area at the terminal's east entrance, which will include a taxi stand, a shuttle van drop-off/pick-up lane, and an auto loading/unloading area. Parking will be provided for about 150 cars.

The total project is estimated to cost $26 million and is funded by federal, state and local government agencies. Construction on the first phase, the MetroLink component, is scheduled to begin in the Spring of 1998 with the full project completed in about three years.

Historic Majestic Bought by Omni Hotels
ST. LOUIS - Omni Hotels returns to St. Louis as the new owner and manager of the historic Majestic Hotel downtown.

The newly named Omni Majestic Hotel, constructed in 1914, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984. It is one of less than 150 hotels and resorts throughout the country that is recognized for preserving and maintaining its historic integrity, architecture, and ambience.

Omni bought the 9-story, 91-room hotel located at 1019 Pine Street from Bray & Gillespie, a hotel and real estate investment firm based in Atlanta.

"We felt it critical that Omni Hotels once again have a presence in St. Louis," said Peter Strebel, Omni's regional director of marketing. He noted that Omni has been concentrating on acquiring historic hotels in the Midwest. "We jumped at the opportunity to add the Majestic to our portfolio of properties."

The hotel's interior features reupholstered chairs, classic reproduction 19th century post beds, botanical paintings and lavish drapes. The richly appointed lobby with overstuffed chairs, crown moldings and ornate wallpaper in deep hues of reds, blues, greens and gold recreates an ambience that greeted distinguished guests over 80 years ago.

The hotel's occupancy rate has been around 75 percent. In a aggressive effort to bring back the 4-star rating, Strebel said that clients will experience an increase in services.

"We'll be doing things like triple sheets on all the beds, turn down service, robes in the room and other nice amenities," he emphasized. In addition, guests will see a new menu and dining concept in the Grill early next year.
