Taking Stock of Our City and Our Region

Mike Jones,
former deputy mayor for development in City of St. Louis.

ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), Sept 9, 2001 - The Missouri Historical Society will welcome featured speaker Mike Jones,
former deputy mayor for development in St. Louis, for the upcoming St.
Louis Urban Forum on Thursday, Sept 13, at 7:00 p.m. at the Missouri History Museum in Forest Park.
The St. Louis Urban Forum, a free series of community
dialogues dedicated to improving St. Louis city and the region, is presented in
partnership with the Public Policy Research Center at the University of
Missouri-St. Louis, FOCUS St. Louis, and The Citizens for Home Rule. This series theme is Good Governance: A Regional Choice.
This first regional dialogue, moderated by E. Terrence Jones, professor
of political science at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, will help
participants understand how policies and governmental structures, most of which
were put into place over a hundred years ago, have created a context for
both the city and the surrounding region. A panel of local leaders
including Mayor Francis Kenney III of Clayton and Donald Suggs,
president and publisher of the St. Louis American, will join Mike Jones
in this honest dialogue about why cities matter at all.
Jones will explore current challenges facing city government. The citizens of St. Louis and of the state of Missouri are facing a crucial moment and a unique opportunity looms in the near future. In November of 2002, through a statewide amendment, all citizens of the state will have the chance to vote on home rule for the city of St. Louis. The series anticipates this vote by examining what good governance means to all of us, no matter where we live.
