ST. LOUIS, MO, (SLFP.com), August 23, 2003 - Thousands of concerned parents attended the Third Annual Back to School Festival at Vashon High School.
The event served as a "one-stop shop" opportunity for families throughout the school district to register students, get children immunized, and obtain information about bus transportation and after-school care.
This year's festival featured refreshments, entertainment, door prizes,
vouchers for school supplies, and activities for children. Representatives were on hand from various community agencies that provide services for children. Translators were also available to help families that speak Arabic, Bosnian, Farsi, Kurdish, Spanish, Somali and Vietnamese.
Melody Kelly attended the festival with her two kids. Although she knew that pre-registration was available at the public library, Kelly stated that because her kids' school was closing, she decided to come to Vashon High School for registration to take advantage of all the services.
"The Back to School Family Festival offers a fun and convenient way for
families in the district to enroll their children and pick up information
and get questions answered to prepare for the start of school," said
Everette Carter, the event organizer and project director for the school
district's Safe Schools/Healthy Students program.
This year, the district is offering more than 100 locations around the city including all St. Louis Public Schools and St. Louis Public Libraries (except Charing Cross and St. Louis Marketplace satellite locations) where families can complete pre-registration for new students or students who have new addresses.
To register a child who has never attended a St. Louis Public School, the
parent or guardian needs to bring the following: proof of St. Louis City
address, up-to-date immunization records for each child, and a birth
certificate for each child. If the student has a new address within the
city, proof of the new St. Louis City address is needed.
The first day of school for St. Louis Public Schools is Sept. 8, 2003.
