Life Science Research Board Announces Designation of Four Centers of Excellence ST. LOUIS, MO (SLFP.com), August 12, 2007 - The Missouri Life Science Research Board has announced the designation of four Centers of Excellence. The centers will be located in St. Louis, Kansas City, Springfield and a statewide center based in Columbia. The centers will be tasked to focus their makeup, expertise and collaborations on agriculture research, specifically in the areas of bioenergy, plant science, and animal health and nutrition. "This is a very exciting time for life science research in the state of Missouri," Department of Economic Development director Greg Steinhoff said. "These centers represent very important growth potential for the Show Me State in the areas of animal health and nutrition, bioenergy, and plant sciences. They will play a key role to strengthening the status of this region as America's animal health corridor, Missouri's status as a world leader in plant biotechnology and in developing innovative, good paying jobs for Missourians." The Life Sciences Research Board, created in 2003 to support biotechnology programs and research, was appropriated $13 million dollars this year by the Missouri General Assembly. That funding comes from a portion of the state's annual tobacco settlement. For consideration, a center must be established within a specific geographical area; shall be comprised of public and private not-for-profit academic, research, or health care institutions or organizations that have a minimum of $15 million dollars combined in annual research expenditures in the life sciences - including a minimum of $2 million dollars in basic research in life sciences. Members of the Life Sciences Research Board are: Dr. Roger L. Mitchell, chair, Columbia; Dr. Jeanne Daffron, St. Joseph; Jeffrey L. Fox, St. Louis; Dr. Richard D. Johnson, Kansas City; Rep. Robert F. Onder, St. Louis; Kevin Sprouse, Columbia; and Edward Stevens, Kansas City. The St. Louis Center for Excellence, chaired by Roger Beachy, president of the Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, includes five institutions that conduct research in the area of plant sciences: Donald Danforth Plant Science Center, Missouri Botantical Gardens, Saint Louis University, University of Missouri-St. Louis, and Washington University.
