ST. LOUIS, MO, (PRNewswire), June 24, 2010 - Governor Jay Nixon today took part in the official announcement that worldwide information technology company Unisys is locating a new application modernization center of excellence in St. Louis, a project that is expected to create 300 new high-tech jobs in St. Louis in the next two years.

The Governor made the announcement today during a press conference at the downtown offices of the St. Louis Regional Chamber and Growth Association, joined by company executives and local community and government leaders.

"We are thrilled that a respected, internationally-renowned IT company like Unisys has chosen St. Louis as the location for its new application modernization center, which we expect to create 300 high-tech, high-paying jobs for our fellow Missourians," stated Gov. Nixon.

The company has already begun staffing the center, which is currently operating out of a temporary location in St. Louis, with a variety of occupations, including IT positions in the areas of application and architecture development.

In a Q&A session following the announcement, Ted Davies, President of Federal Systems, Unisys stated that they are looking for a wide range of skills. "We do have a lot of application development for the Department of Agriculture, as well as other government clients. So people who have history and background in programming in some of the more modern languages would be very helpful. We will also be looking at some enterprise architects," responded Davies.

Certified developers at the center will also work to develop applications for Apple Mac, Apple iPhone and iPad environments in accordance with the requirements of the U.S. Federal government. New jobs created at the center, which is expected to move into its permanent location in downtown St. Louis later this year, will pay an average annual salary of $55,000.

"We have a long term relationship with the USDA as well as clients with Scott Air Force Base. We have team on the ground already and we're continuing to grow. We plan to add 75 more jobs by the end of this year and growing to 300 by the end of 2012," stated Davies.

He laughed when asked to give an examples of one of their "killer apps."

"We do a lot of mission-critical apps that are very specific to clients. One application, for example, was developed for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). The application collects information from financial institutions around the company and it facilitates reporting and tracking of the health of banks around the nation," stated Davies, repeating that they are focused on client mission.

Davies received a round of applause when responding to a question on apps that deat with transportation infrastructure. "When we look at transportation infrastructure, it's not only getting in and out of airports, but moving around town. We haven't selected the final location in the city, but the ability to get around town is great here. I live outside of Washington, D.C. and I will add a personal note that driving in and out of this town is a lot nicer than driving in and out of Washington, D.C."

The state of Missouri awarded Unisys $4.5 million in Missouri Quality Jobs program tax credits, which provides tax credits to businesses that create a predetermined number of jobs, among other qualifications. The state's incentive package also includes $900,000 in New Jobs Training funding and $212,500 in Recruitment Assistance.

"Today's announcement represents the creation of exactly the kind of high-tech jobs that will be crucial to Missouri's 21st- century economy," Gov. Nixon said. "Having Unisys invest in the St. Louis area will provide another shot-in-the-arm for our rebounding economy, which has created more than 31,000 new jobs in Missouri over the past 4 months."
