& Family Fitness Weekend Announced

By Bob Moore, Editor, SLFP.com

ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), April 17, 2001 - The day prior to being sworn in as the new Mayor of the City of St. Louis, Francis G. Slay was off to a running start in promoting events taking place in St. Louis. At a press conference on Monday at the Missouri Athletic Club, he announced the second annual Spirit of St. Louis Marathon & Family Fitness Weekend, scheduled for October 20 & 21, 2001.

"The economic impact is significant as we welcome participants from all over the nation and some from around world. Residents and visitors alike will get a great taste of all that St. Louis has to offer," remarked Mayor Slay. "I'm looking forward to see this as a long tradition in St. Louis. This is also a great way of encouraging healthy lifestyles, family fitness and compassion for others."

"Please accept my best wishes as you begin preparations for this year's event as I prepare to begin my new administration," commented Mayor Slay. "It's inspired me to know of people such as the organizers of The Spirit of St. Louis Marathon & Family Fitness Weekend who have worked to elevate the status and quality of living in the City of St. Louis.

The marathon will provide an outstanding opportunity to showcase St. Louis as the route will take runners throughout several neighborhoods and past famous landmarks and attractions noted St. Louis Sports Commission President Frank Viverito. "For local residents, the event is dedicated to family fitness, the development of amateur sports and it's also just a lot of fun," said Viverito.

"Thanks to the tremendous support of the St. Louis Community, last year's Spirit of St. Louis Marathon & Family Fitness Weekend was a huge success," said Nancy Lieberman, marathoner and president of The Spirit of St. Louis Marathon & Family Fitness Weekend. She noted that more than 2,500 people of all ages and athletic abilities helped to raise $10,000 for Special Olympics Missouri.

This year's event also introduces the Children's Read & Run Marathon, which will incorporate reading and running for school-aged children. Children, between the ages of 6 to 12 will read 26 books and run 26.2 miles, one mile at a time, and finish their last mile the day of the Marathon.

"We want to encourage kids to keep both their bodies and minds active over the summer while school is out," said Lieberman. McBride & Son's Read & Run Marathon kicks off at 8 a.m. on May 5 at St. Louis Galleria. The first 1000 kids to register will receive a free book. Children who wish to participate in the event will have an opportunity to run their first "official" mile within the property of the Galleria. The final 1.2 miles will be completed at Soldiers' Memorial on October 21.

The events on Saturday, October 20, include a 5k run, 10k Volksmarch & walk, and three children's runs. The 26.2 mile marathon route on Sunday will take runners near Soldier's Memorial and will wind its way through Soulard, the Central West End, Forest Park, Clayton and the University City/DeBaliviere area before returning downtown. The course, designed by Dave McGillivray, is sanctioned and certified for U.S. Track & Field and for the Boston Marathon Qualification.
