Image Tracking System Used to Identify Unauthorized Use of Copyrighted Images LOS ANGELES, (BUSINESS WIRE) March 20, 2003 - In a stock image industry first, Workbookstock, a supplier of high-end, rights-managed stock images to art buyers throughout the advertising and communications industries, has successfully tracked down and identified the use of several unauthorized, copyrighted images on the Web using proprietary technology it licensed from Digimarc Corporation. According to an announcement, application of this technology was developed jointly with Workbookstock and designed to meet their very specific electronic imaging challenges. "The Internet has been a great tool for advancing the use of stock imagery," said Alexis Scott, publisher, Workbook & Company. "However, it's also made it easier than ever to `borrow' images and replicate them for unauthorized use. We owe it to our contributors to protect their copyrighted work -- it's how we do business." Workbookstock was launched by Workbook & Company, publisher of the Workbook and an array of other widely used graphic arts resources, as a commercial stock image Web site, and in less than two years has become a primary source of rights-managed stock images for art buyers. Contributors from around the world provide images for commercial use to Workbookstock, which, in turn, makes rights-managed images available to buyers and users of art for their commercial applications. To protect the intellectual property and potential earnings of its contributors, Workbookstock implemented technology that tracks copyrighted images downloaded from their site via application of digital watermarks thereby ensuring that images appearing on the Web were used appropriately and that contributors were being compensated for their work product. "We were looking for a way to monitor the images that we host and to prevent their unauthorized use," said Doug Dawirs, director, Online Services, Workbook & Company. "Therefore, we worked with Digimarc to tailor their watermarking and tracking technology to our needs," he said. Workbookstock's success in locating infringed images is facilitated by use of Digimarc's ImageBridge Pro(TM) technology, which dynamically watermarks images with transaction specific data. Workbookstock uses this information to identify the image, the date and time it was downloaded and who did the downloading. Once the images are marked, Digimarc's MarcSpider(TM) technology is used to track and locate the images on the Web. This image-tracking technology works by continually crawling the Web searching for digitally watermarked images and reporting results back to Workbookstock enabling the company to identify potential copyright infringements. In the majority of cases so far, users who have infringed on the copyrights of Workbookstock contributors have received cease and desist letters; the company intends to litigate those who won't comply with the copyright laws. For images or more information go to: www.workbookstock.com "We're pleased to be able to support Workbookstock's efforts to communicate the copyrights of its image contributors and, ultimately, to help deter unauthorized use of those images as they are distributed electronically," said Larry Trevarthen, director of segment marketing for commercial imagery, Digimarc Corporation. Digimarc, based in Tualatin, Ore., has an extensive intellectual property portfolio, with 83 issued U.S. patents with more than 1,800 claims, and more than 350 pending applications for U.S. patents, in digital watermarking, personal identification and related technologies. LOUIS, (SLFP.com) March 20, 2003 - Senniger Powers Leavitt & Roedel, a St. Louis-based law firm, has announced that it was ranked in the top 10 biotech/drug patent prosecution firms in the country by PatentRatings, LLC. The annual list of top U.S. patent prosecution law firms appeared in the March 2003 edition of IP Law & Business. Senniger's designation as a "blue ribbon" firm in Biotechnology/Drug Patents (Biotech) was based on a quality study of patents issued in 2002 to the top 100 largest firms (by number of patents issued) in each technology sector. "One interesting fact the study reveals," stated PatentRatings co-founder and CEO Jonathan Barney, "is that experience and expertise within specific technology sectors weigh heavily toward higher quality patents." Among the identified top-10 firms in each technology sector, most had devoted a higher-than-average percentage of their practices prosecuting patents in that specific technology sector, stated Barney. Thus, while biotech patents accounted for less than about 10% of patents prosecuted by all firms in 2002, they accounted for more than 25% of patents prosecuted by the top-10 firms in that sector. Among the 49 patents granted in 2002 which led to Senniger's ranking as a blue ribbon firm are 12 patents issued to Florida State University in the field of taxanes. Taxol, a taxane, is the best-selling cancer drug in history. Senniger began working with FSU in the taxane field in 1989 and since then has obtained 70 U.S. patents on behalf of FSU in this field, some of which have been licensed to Bristol-Myers Squibb for the manufacture of Taxol and others which have been licensed to Wyeth Pharmaceuticals for next-generation drugs. One of the compounds which has been licensed to Wyeth Pharmaceuticals is currently in human trials and has attracted considerable attention as the next-generation cancer drug to follow Taxol. "Our long-standing philosophy has been to emphasize quality, particularly throughout the growth of our practice group," stated Edward J. Hejlek, partner at Senniger, Powers, Leavitt & Roedel and a licensed patent attorney for 19 years. "It is gratifying to see that our emphasis on quality has not gone unnoticed." Senniger's Pharmaceutical/Life Sciences practice group, which was responsible for patents in the biotechnology and pharmaceutical areas, has twenty members, each having at least a bachelor's level degree in biology, chemistry, chemical engineering or pharmacy; five members of the practice group have master level degrees and two members of the practice group have PhD level degrees. Senniger, the largest intellectual property firm in Missouri, represents companies including: Baxter Healthcare Corp., BJC Healthcare, Florida State University, Kimberly-Clark Worldwide, Inc., Monsanto Co., Novus International, Inc., Pharmacia Corporation, Saint Louis University, Sigma-Aldrich Co., and Washington University in St. Louis.
