MLK DayMartin Luther King, Jr. Celebration

by Bob Moore, SLFP.com

ST. LOUIS, (SLFP.com), Jan 15, 2001 - Several thousand civil rights and community leaders, families and friends gathered on a cold, blustery Monday morning at the Old Courthouse to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday in St. Louis.

Activities included an address by Mayor Clarence Harmon and several dignitaries in the rotunda of the history building, which was the site of the Dred Scott decision. Following the ceremony, the large crowd gathered outside the Courthouse for the march. With a police escort, participants carried signed and banners quietly along Market Street toward Grand and then north on Grand to Powell Symphony Hall.

For many participants, the event was an honored tradition. Alphie Smith (carrying sign in right photo) noted that she had marched every year in St. Louis with the exception of several years when she marched in Atlanta.

At Powell Symphony Hall, an interfaith service included music by Dello Thedford and the Symphonic Gospel Choir and St. Peters A.M.E. Choir. Noted historian Rev. Robert Tabscott spoke at the event.Red Dot
